Brooklyn-based band Momma – led by singers/guitarists Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten – today release their highly anticipated new album Household Name. Produced by bassist Aron Kobayashi Ritch and mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Emily Lazar, the record is Momma’s first full-band collaboration recorded in a proper studio that sees them skilfully carve out their own path in today’s world of alt-rock. Balancing heavy riffs, deep emotions, inviting sonic production, and a light-hearted, wry sense of humour, Household Name tells the world: This is Momma.

Bygone heroes helped inspire a lyrical theme throughout Household Name: the rise and fall of the rock star, and the tropes and tribulations that come with that arc. The theme allowed Momma to celebrate (and, in some cases, directly reference) icons like Nirvana, Pavement, Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, and the Breeders’ Kim Deal, while weaving in their own perspective and experiences. Although Household Name finds the band embracing personal storytelling for the first time, much of the album embraces a satiric sensibility with its tongue-in-cheek rock culture references.

It follows the release of the album’s latest single, “Motorbike“, accompanied by a video directed by Emma Penrose and Zach Shorrosh, earlier this week.

Weingarten says: “I wrote this song about a boy I had a crush on who really wanted nothing to do with me,” explains Weingarten, who sings lead vocals on “Motorbike.” “The song is basically just fantasy – even though it’s about a real person, it’s also about how we can make up elaborate ideas of who other people are in our heads, and get so caught up in these fake scenarios that they kind of end up feeling real. I wanted the song to feel like you’re escaping something, because my daydreams about this boy and his motorcycle were definitely an escape from my life at the time.”

The album release had helped fuel a breakthrough year for the band that has seen them open for Wet Leg and Beabadoobee in the US and perform their first headlining shows in the UK, including a sold-out show at The Windmill in London, and fill a string of packed rooms across Brighton for The Great Escape.

Following the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Unlearning, Glasgow’s Walt Disco today share a series of remixes from their favourite queer artists. The first is from musical maverick Lynks, who unleashes a fresh dose of underground club energy on the hyperpop-influenced “Hold Yourself As High As Her”, out now. DJ and producer TAAHLIAH’s take on “Macilent” and frequent Walt Disco collaborator BOBBIE’s version of “Selfish Lover”, each follow on July 15 and July 29.

Of the remixes, Walt Disco say “We’re extremely excited and honoured to be presenting these remixes, crafted by some of our most revered queer artists we have the pleasure of knowing. They’ve each lent their talent and individuality to reimagining three of our beloved songs. Lynks, with their ferocious flavour and unmistakable presence. The new single follows a busy couple of months for the band that has seen them tour with Wet Leg in the US and perform their first headlining shows in the UK, including a sold-out show at The Windmill in London, and fill a string of packed rooms across Brighton for The Great Escape.

“Lucky” is out now alongside a video directed by Emma Penrose & Zack Shorrosh, Friedman, who helms lead vocals on “Lucky,” explains, “I wrote it after my significant other and I had to spend an unknown amount of time apart from each other on opposite sides of the country. I wanted it to feel anthemic, like a sappy and sentimental love song, but I still wanted to speak on how exciting it feels to know you found true treasure with someone you are in love with.”

“We didn’t want to get too cheesy and literal so Etta suggested some ideas from the Green Day ‘Walking Contradiction’ video as well as the fun and etherealness of certain Beabadoobee videos,” explains director Penrose. “In the end, we feel like the video displays how much fun it was to film – everyone involved was a friend of either Zack & Emma’s or Etta & Allegra’s, so the project feels very personal and lighthearted.”

New York trio Sunflower Bean release their long-awaited new album, Headful of Sugar, today! To celebrate the release, the band also share new single “In Flight”. On the track and video vocalist / guitarist Nick Kivlen says, “This song is a romantic vision of meeting a lover, running away together, and entering a dangerous new world. It’s less safe but also less suffocating. The video follows me through a series of twilight zone-style mishaps as I search to be seen or understood. Things only improve when I finally find like-minded people. Is it a dream? Is it the multiverse? It’s for the viewer to decide.”

The album’s fuzzed-out and soaring lead single “Speeding 72″, also released today, details a fast- burning romance between two kids who meet at a show and go for a ride—its chorus referencing Pavement’s “Gold Soundz” with nostalgic admiration. Its Madeline Leshner and Zach Stone-directed, part The Breakfast Club inspired, video perfectly captures the song’s spirit: cruising around in the summer with your friends with no real destination, windows down and blasting music.

“‘Speeding 72” is probably the most collaboratively written song on the new record. We wanted it to be the sort of summertime anthem that you can turn on during a drive to impress your crush,” explains the band. “The most important part of the production was setting the right mood to transport the listener. The song starts with Aron getting into his car (which is featured on the album cover), and then turning on the ignition.”

After supporting Wet Leg on sold-out West Coast shows last month, the band will shortly commence a much-anticipated UK stint of dates. The band will be headlining London’s Brixton Windmill on Tuesday 10th May and Manchester’s Yes on Saturday 14th May and open for Illuminati Hotties in Leeds on Friday 6th May, as well as performing in Glasgow and Brighton for The Great Escape Festival.
